A Community Changing the Odds
HARLEM RISING chronicles the remarkable history of Geoffrey Canada’s Harlem Children’s Zone (HCZ) and the lives transformed by one of the nation’s most ambitious efforts to break the cycle of poverty.
Drawing from more than 4,000 hours of extraordinary archival footage filmed by Harlem youth from the late 1970s through the early 2000s and woven together with newly filmed interviews and contemporary footage, the film brings three generations of students, parents, educators, and community members back to the places and moments that shaped their lives.
Their stories reveal more than the history of the Harlem Children’s Zone. They reveal what happens when a community invests in its children—and what it means to grow up believing that your circumstances do not have to determine your future.
This is Harlem, told by the people who lived it.

AVENUES OF DREAMS: RECLAIMING MLK BOULEVARDS follows the scholars, community organizers, and business owners working to reclaim the streets named for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.—in Baltimore, St. Louis, and beyond.
Tracing the legacy of redlining, racially restrictive housing covenants, disinvestment, and segregation, the film explores how policies written decades ago helped divide neighborhoods—and a country.
Along MLK Boulevards, a new generation is reclaiming what was once denied—building businesses, strengthening neighborhoods, and imagining what these avenues can become.
Avenues of Dreams is a journey through the streets that history divided—and the people working to bring them back together.

The film follows legendary oceanographer Sylvia Earle, marine biologist Ocean Ramsey, actor and environmental advocate Adrian Grenier, and a team of shark experts as they study the mounting challenges facing shark populations in a world shaped by industrial overfishing.
Far from the shoreline, surrounded by some of the richest marine life on Earth, Sharkland explores the critical role sharks play in ocean ecosystems—and the consequences of their continued decline.
As Executive Producer of Fusion’s Investigative Unit, I co-produced the film, working with Nicolas Ibarguen and the production team to bring this story to the screen. Fusion was a joint venture between ABC News and Univision.
The opioid crisis begins long before a needle reaches a vein. The Heroin Trail follows the human chain connecting two families an ocean apart: a Vermont family fighting to break free from heroin addiction, and a family in the mountains of Colombia growing poppy simply to survive.
Produced as an online serialized documentary for FUSION, the project traces the journey of heroin from the fields where its raw material is grown, to the “cooks” who turn poppy paste into heroin and to the communities devastated by addiction—revealing the deeply connected lives on opposite ends of a global drug trade. The series was later expanded into an hour-long documentary.
As Executive Producer, I helped shape the editorial vision and oversaw the project from development and field production through post-production and final delivery, while also serving as writer and Director of Photography.

When Civic-US asked us to create a series around Ford Motor Company CEO Jim Farley’s gemba tours, we looked to an unlikely source for inspiration: Studs Terkel’s Working: People Talk About What They Do All Day and How They Feel About What They Do—a timeless portrait of the dignity, pride, frustrations, and dreams found in everyday work.
What began as a one-off project became From the Floor—an ongoing journey inside Ford’s manufacturing plants.
To date, we’ve traveled to more than 20 Ford plants across North America, creating cinematic, intimate portraits of the people who make the vehicles we drive. Welders. Engineers. Line workers. Technicians. Generations of autoworkers whose hands, skill, and dedication keep an iconic American industry moving, revealing the human stories behind the factory floor.
From Apprentice to Electrician
For Darriean Diaz, the path to becoming an electrician began the day she walked through the doors of Ford’s Kansas City Assembly Plant.
Fresh out of high school, Darriean entered Ford’s four-year apprenticeship program, trading a traditional classroom for hands-on training on the factory floor. Four years later, she emerged as a full-time electrician—and a first-generation Ford employee whose journey has inspired the people closest to her. Her husband and brother have since followed her into the apprenticeship program.
Through Darriean’s story, From Apprentice to Electrician explores the power of apprenticeship programs to open doors into the skilled trades, transforming a first job into a career—and one person’s opportunity into a path for an entire family.

At Ford’s Livonia Transmission Plant, Robert Matthews calls himself a “car guy.” But his talent extends far beyond the factory floor—he’s equally at home turning wrenches, building transmissions, or putting pencil to sketch pad.
For Matthews, the transmission is the heart of the vehicle. And when the heart has to perform, quality matters. His story offers a glimpse into the pride, craft, and creativity that live inside Ford’s manufacturing workforce.

Dennis Menke knows that the best ideas often come from the people closest to the work.
At Ford’s Lima Engine Plant, Dennis and his coworkers take pride in doing their jobs well—and in finding smarter ways to do them. When they saw an opportunity to make their plant more efficient, they didn’t wait for someone else to solve the problem. They rolled up their sleeves and found a better way.
But Dennis’ commitment to service doesn’t stop when his shift ends. Away from the plant, he volunteers as a firefighter, answering calls and serving his community when people need him most.
This is a portrait of the people behind the work: skilled, inventive, and connected to something bigger than the job itself.

As Ford Motor Company undergoes the biggest transformation in its 120-year history, CEO Jim Farley is visiting Ford factories and assembly plants around the world, meeting with teams and listening to their ideas about opportunity, improvement, and growth. From the Floor goes beyond the machinery and the production line to tell the stories of the people driving that transformation—one shift, one idea, and one personal passion at a time.

Commissioned by the International Center of Photography (ICP) in partnership with MTA Arts & Design, the installation was displayed in the cultural corridor of Grand Central Madison in Manhattan and at the ICP.
